Authentication and authorization infrastructure for research and education communities in Germany.

DFN enables users from science, research, and education to access protected online resources by operating an authentication and authorization infrastructure (AAI). Members of universities and research institutes can access scientific publications, research data, e-learning platforms and many other services via DFN-AAI: They authenticate against their home organization, which then transmits certain user information to the resource they want to access. If the set of information complies with the access rules of the service, access is granted.

As the DFN-AAI federation operator, DFN creates the necessary trust as well as the organizational and technical framework for a secure and trustworthy exchange of information between home organizations and service providers. International cooperation is possible via eduGAIN, the interfederation DFN-AAI is part of.
